Promise 263: Lift Up

  1. Lift up

 Psalm 147:6

The Lord lifteth up the meek:

He casteth the wicked down to the ground.

The meek shall inherit the earth, and it is the meek that will be lifted up. The meek are contrasted with the wicked: up with the meek, down with the wicked. Meek does not mean wimpy and weak; meek means humble and admitting need. Those who need the Lord, believe Him, and ask Him for help are the ones He lifts up. We are already weak and helpless in our sinful humanity; the key is to recognize it and admit it: “I need help. I can’t do it myself.”

On the basis of the promise that the Lord lifts up the meek and casts down the wicked we are confident to pray and ask for help. Thus we daily repent and pray and believe and receive; the promise of lifting up and casting down comes true in our lives again and again.

The unconditional promise is for the meek; it is not that becoming meek causes the promise to come true; it is not that meekness is a condition for lifting. It is that the meek seek God; the meek seek help from God; the meek seek and they find. They recognize the vast difference between themselves and God: we are weak and He is strong. We are all weak; the meek know it and they know who fights and wins for them.
