Promise in the Prophets 396: Stronghold

396. Stronghold

Nahum 1:7 The Lord is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble; and he knoweth them that trust in him.

All sinners have several strongholds in their soul, some from sin, some from birth, some from addiction, and some from trauma. A stronghold is a place in the soul where some habit or tendency has a strong hold upon us. These particular besetting sins are difficult to get rid of, because they have a strong hold. They are forgiven, but we can’t seem to stop doing or thinking them. It is like a castle or a fort where Sin and Satan are allowed to reside, for we invited them in and kept them there.

In I Corinthians 10:4 God says we have spiritual weapons that have divine power to destroy strongholds. But the Lord promises here that the Lord is good, and the Lord is a stronghold in a time of trouble, and the Lord knows those who trust in Him. We have the possibility of running from one sinful stronghold into the other stronghold, which is the Lord Himself. He promises to be there as a stronghold. We get into trouble at various times and seasons, but the Lord will be a stronghold during those times. Run into Him and be safe. The temptations and attacks of Satan will never stop until we die, but at the same time we have a safe place to hide, while at the same time the Spirit, using spiritual weapons, destroys the destructive strongholds.

The Lord is good to give us a defensive place and offensive weapons to use in the day of trouble. He also knows us: He knows our needs; He knows our weaknesses; He knows our strongholds; He cares; He loves; He heals; He makes it all better. We run to Him and we trust in Him alone for every good thing needful.
