Human Response 116: Sense of Inadequacy

Exodus 6:30 And Moses said before the Lord, Behold, I am of uncircumcised lips, and how shall Pharaoh hearken unto me?

Moses’ response to God’s Mission continues to be resistance because, as a sinner, he knows he in incapable and inadequate. Moses first attempts have already failed: Pharaoh rejected his request, and the people would not listen to him either. Now again the Lord commands him,”Speak to Pharaoh.” Unbelief responds again: Why should Pharaoh listen to me? My own people won’t even listen to me! Naturally, he is hesitant to obey. But it is more than just being unqualified and inadequate; it is the knowledge that he is a sinner that prompts his objection.

It is the same conviction of sin that caused Isaiah (“unclean lips”) and Peter (“sinful man”) to resist God’s call. The Good News is that the conviction of sin that comes from the awareness of God leads to repentance and faith in the Gospel. Essentially, God’s response to confession of sin is forgiveness, love, and empowerment. The Lord uses weak vessels to get His wonderful works accomplished.

So we admit our weakness and confess our sin, not as an excuse, as it is just true. We are inadequate. But the Gospel Word always follows: we are forgiven, given a new life, and the Spirit in us speaks and does what we can’t. God accomplishes great things through flawed people.
