Numbers 15:18-19 Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, When ye come into the land whither I bring you, Then it shall be, that, when ye eat of the bread of the land, ye shall offer up a heave offering unto the Lord.
Numbers 15 speaks of the various offerings the people will make in response to the Lord’s giving of the land: when ye come into the land. The NT fulfillment of this type is: When you enter the Kingdom of Life by being born anew of water and the Spirit. We enter the Land which God gives by grace when we are baptized and believe in Christ. We receive that life by faith. After we enter the Kingdom and receive Eternal Life in it, then we give thank offerings to God.
We eat the bread of the land. This signifies eating the body and blood of Christ by faith, in Communion. Jesus is the Bread of Life. In the Divine Service we bring an offering to the Lord after we heard the gospel in the sermon. Then we eat of the bread (the body of Christ).
We go about our lives making offerings by loving and serving one another, giving of ourselves for the good of others, being kind and generous, saying and doing good things to those nearby; in other words, we offer our self, our time, our energy, and our money and goods, and our prayers to Jesus for other people. This kind of lifestyle is all in response to God giving the Kingdom. “By the mercies of God, present your bodies as a living sacrifice [Romans 12:1].”
