Human Response 266: Fear the Lord and Observe to do Commands

Deuteronomy 6:24-25 And the Lord commanded us to do all these statutes, to fear the Lord our God, for our good always, that he might preserve us alive, as it is at this day. And it shall be our righteousness, if we observe to do all these commandments before the Lord our God, as he hath commanded us.

Our response to God’s salvation is to fear the Lord and observe to do all His Commandments. Fearing the Lord is believing in Jesus so firmly that we want to do what He says. The good works come out of faith, almost unconsciously, but still intentionally. The faith actually works. When we fail to do, we have a Spirit-driven godly sorrow that leads to renewed faith, and its fruit. We are forgiven. We have life.

The power and the motivation to do comes from the Gospel of Christ. This why Christians live good lives. But there is another motivation for living righteously: it is for our good always and it preserves us alive, that is, life is better and we enjoy it. A good life is a result of faith and obedience more than it is a motivator. We all want to live a good life, but sin’s allure, the world’s temptations, and the devil’s lies look like real living, but the end thereof is real death.

Therefore, we look to the Lord alone for all good and true life. We love Him because of Christ, and He gives life and good things: forgiveness, righteousness, salvation, eternal life, peace, love, joy, hope, etc., so we fear and do.
