Deuteronomy-31:16 And the Lord said unto Moses, Behold, thou shalt sleep with thy fathers; this people will rise up and go a whoring after the gods of the strangers of the land, whither they go to be among them, and will forsake me, and break my covenant which I have made with them.
After Moses’ death the Lord prophesied that the people would break the First Commandment of the Covenant. They would respond to God’s Salvation by whoring after other gods, the gods of the world. The unfaithful marriage metaphor is used to graphically describe our covenant relationship with the Lord God. The faithful and pure wife becomes a whore. Whoring happens when we do not fear, love, and trust in God above things. We seek after Profit, Pleasure, and Prestige (or, Gold, Girls, and Glory), the gods that the world offers us.
We will forsake the Lord when we look to the world of sin for good feelings, for being comfortable, for significance, and for security. We do not seek first the kingdom of God. By seeking good from the world we break the covenant bond between us and God. Unfaithfulness is our sinful response. It is hard to believe we could be so foolish and evil. But we are.
But Jesus loves prostitutes and idolaters, and eats with them. He was faithful and true, even unto death. He was innocent and holy. He took our place under the Covenant, and made a new one between us and God. In Christ, and only in Him, we are faithful, as a bride without blemish.
