2 Chronicles 23:3, 8 And all the people made a covenant with the king in the house of God. And he said unto them, Behold, the king’s son shall reign, as the Lord hath said of the sons of David….So the Levites and all Judah did according to all things that Jehoiada the priest had commanded.
After seven years of rule by Athaliah, the queen mother, Jehoiada the priest finally got up the courage and took action to get rid of this idolatrous ruler. He anointed Joash king at the age of seven and helped Joash rule until he was older. God made a promise that a son of David will rule God’s people forever. Athaliah put this promise in jeopardy. The Lord used Jehoiada (and his wife Jehoshabeath) to restore the people to his faithful covenant.
We learn that while the covenant promises of God are always being opposed by our spiritual enemies, Sin, Death, and the Devil, He will send godly leaders to preach the Gospel and restore a right faith relationship with God.
Every priest was supposed to confront rulers with the demands of God’s Law. Tragically, many priests shied away from this duty, and thus only a few made a difference among God’s people. We trust that the Lord will always raise up for us godly leaders who will keep us on the narrow path of faith in Jesus.
