Psalm 27:14 Wait on the Lord: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the Lord.

David responds, and encourages us to respond, to trouble and need by praying to and trusting in the Lord. Then there may be a period of time between our prayer and our receiving an answer. In that interim time we wait in faith. We trust that God heard our prayer and is preparing to act. During this waiting time we rest in confidence and peace while the Lord fights for us and prepares the answer according to His will. We go about our daily duties praising the Lord for being our God and thanking Him for hearing our prayer. We wait in faith, trusting the Lord to respond to our need and act in His time and in His way.

Isaiah 40:31: “Those who wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength…they shall walk and not faint.” God will strengthen the heart of those who wait in faith and don’t give up. The temptation while waiting is to give up on God. We say, “How long?” But when we wait in faith the Lord strengthens our weak heart instead of letting us faint. Going through difficult times with trust is what God uses to build courage and confidence in place of weakness and weariness. Faith grows while we wait. We believe God when He says, “Wait patiently, I’m working on it, the answer will come.” During the waiting faith grows instead of diminishes.

Psalm 27:8 When thou saidst, Seek ye my face; my heart said unto thee, Thy face, Lord, will I seek.

The Lord calls on us to seek His face. My response to His invitation is to seek His face. God’s face is His presence. His Presence is in the temple. We know where it is on earth, for we know that the human body is the residence of the living God on earth. Through Baptism and faith in the Gospel the Lord enters in to live and rule with us and in us.

But do not look for Him in order to find Him, for He has already found us. Our Father sent His Son to be with us, and the Father and the Son sent the Holy Spirit to dwell within us. We don’t see His Presence with physical eyes, but with the eyes of faith we see and believe the Gospel Truth: God is here. To seek means to bring to conscience awareness what and who is already present. To seek is to practice the presence of God. We seek His face (presence) by hearing and reading His Word, believing the gospel of grace, and responding with prayer and praise and thanks. We are reminded of His Presence in our time alone with God, in the fellowship of two or three gathered in His name, and in the worshiping congregation of believers. We desire God’s presence first above all things and we enjoy Him forever.

And now shall mine head be lifted up above mine enemies round about me: therefore will I offer in the tabernacle sacrifices of joy; I will sing, yea, I will sing praises unto the Lord.

David knew that in a time of trouble the Lord would hide him in His presence and set him on a rock. The rock is Christ, who will be with us always to hide and keep us from our enemies. Therefore, the response is to offer sacrifices of joy and to sing praises unto the Lord. He knew where to go and what to do when the enemies lurk around and threaten.

We, too, respond to a time of trouble by hiding in His Presence, which is always near us and in us, to sacrifice and praise. We know where to go, to Him who loved and gave Himself for us. The sacrifices we offer are the good works we do giving up our time, talent, and treasure for the service of others. And it is a joyful thing to do, as it is for God our Savior.

In the Presence of God, where we are safe, we sing praises unto the Lord. We praise Him for He is good and His mercy endures forever and for His salvation and protection. It is a response of faith. And praise consciously reminds us of the love and care of God, that we are safe in His Presence. Singing praises does not bring us into the temple, but it reminds us that we already there by faith.

The good news for the NT believer is that any time (in a time of trouble or not) and anywhere (in church or at home) we may respond by dying to self with joy by giving and serving others, and we may sing and make melody in our heart to the Lord. Then my head will be lifted up above my enemies, above the troublous circumstances of life in this world. This God does for us.

Psalm 27:4 One thing have I desired of the Lord, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord, and to enquire in the temple.

The evil ones, my spiritual enemies, may come against me all the time, and temptations and troubles surround me without and within. I am distracted about many things and harassed on every side. But my response is to desire and seek one thing. That one thing is God and the awareness of His Presence with me. That one thing is to live in His Presence (dwell in the house), to see the beauty of Holiness and Love, and to pray.

Martha was distracted by many things, but one thing is needful and Mary had chosen the good part (to listen to Jesus), to kneel at his feet. “Seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness.” “Seek the things that are above, where Christ is.” It is not easy to desire the one thing, but when we succeed by the Word and the Spirit life is better.

For David the Presence of God was in the temple. For us, the Presence of God dwells within our body, as a temple. “The kingdom of God is within you.” Seek Him there, see, by faith in the gospel, Him there, live in conscious awareness of His being with you. He is. Believe it. See it. Center your life, thoughts and emotions in Jesus and be safe from destructive and death-dealing enemies. Just One Thing!

Psalm 27:1, 3 The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?…Though an host should encamp against me, my heart shall not fear: though war should rise against me, in this will I be confident.

One of the blessings and joys of fearing, loving, and trusting in God alone is that I have nothing and no one to be afraid of. My spiritual enemies, sin, death, and the devil will war against me all the time, yet I will not fear. In confident faith I will live my life.

Romans 8:31: “If God be for us who can be against us?” Because of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, Almighty God our Father is on our side. V. 35: “Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?” V. 37: “In all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us” These Truths and Comforts may be easy to profess on Sunday morning, but it gets harder when life happens every day. Therefore, we make use of Gospel reminders daily, even if it is just singing, thanking, and praising God during the day.

The Enemy is always nearby, but our Lord and Savior is always closer. We respond with faith so that we can confidently say: I will not fear, worry, doubt, nor be afraid.

Psalm 26:11-12 But as for me, I will walk in mine integrity; redeem me, and merciful unto me, My foot standeth in an even place: in the congregations will I bless the Lord.

Instead of associating with sinners and bloody men, I will live and walk by faith in Jesus, who in mercy has redeemed me and counted my faith as righteousness. Because of my God-given integrity and holiness (an alien righteousness graced in me), I can stand on level ground in a safe and secure place. Therefore, I respond to God’s great salvation by blessing the Lord in the congregation of gathered believers every Sunday. To bless is to say good things about God and praise Him with my whole heart.

Because of what God has done for me in Christ, granting me His righteousness, redeeming me from evil, and being merciful to me the sinner, I will live my life in faithful and thankful response to His great goodness. I hear and receive the Gospel as often as I can so that I may stand secure and bless the Lord at all times during the day. I fellowship in the company of the redeemed and avoid the company of the unbelieving world. “Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.”

Psalm 26:5, 8 I have hated the congregation of evil doers; and will not sit with the wicked….Lord, I have loved the habitation of thy house, and the place where thine honor dwelleth.

God’s lovingkindness, grace, and mercy are always present with us. We respond to this truth by associating and fellowshipping with other believers. And we avoid associating with and sitting with unbelievers and doing the things they do. We hate those relationships and the influence they have on us.

But we love being in church and fellowshipping with other believers. The influence we give to and receive from fellow Christians strengthens our faith and life. We sense the presence of the Lord more fully when we dwell in the house of the Lord, in the company of fellow believers who gather to hear the Gospel and receive the Sacraments. There God is, and there I love to be, for in that company I find strength and hope. God habituates His temple, which is His body, whether it is just me, two or three in His name, or a large assembly of Christians in whom the lord dwells.

God is with us always, and so we are with Him, and we love it. We don’t see the glory of God, but we believe it, for we see the cross which shows the glory of His Love.

Psalm 25:20-21 O keep my soul, and deliver me: let me not be ashamed; for I put my trust in thee. Let integrity and uprightness preserve me; for I wait on thee.

David is trusting in the Lord while he prays for the Lord to keep him and deliver him. He trusts that the Lord will not disappoint him nor let him down. He believes that the Lord will be present to hear and help him and deliver him from his present fears, troubles, and worries. He is given the confidence in the Lord that He will keep and preserve him, so that he need not turn to any other source of help.

He is so sure of God’s salvation that he will wait on the Lord to work out the answers for his deliverance. He does give up on God, knowing that in His appropriate time He will act. His integrity and uprightness means he is praying “in Jesus’ name.” For Christ has earned and given uprightness to us, and those who believe in His promise have it.

It takes faith to wait on the Lord. The wait is not wondering if God will answer, but it is watching to see when and how God delivers. We serve God and believe Him while we wait, at the same time giving thanks for hearing and caring.

Psalm 2515-16 Mine eyes are ever toward the Lord; for he shall pluck my feet out of the net. Turn thee unto me, and have mercy upon me; for I am desolate and afflicted.

David is always and ever looking toward the Lord, especially when he in trouble and distress. He feels like he is trapped in a net and only the Lord can pluck him out. His first response to the desolation and affliction he is experiencing is to turn to the Lord.

Davis asks and expects the Lord to see him in his need and deliver him from his problems. His faith is not only in God and His power to save, but also he believes in His mercy and desire to save. God can and He will. God grant us the kind of faith that expects the Lord to hear our prayer and show mercy.

The answer comes to us when God turns toward us. Believe that He pays attention to us personally and that He cares about the issues we are dealing with. He may be busy running the universe and the world, but He is never too busy to attend to our particular situation. He loves the world of people, but He also loves just me. And His focus is not on me only when in distress but all the time.

David was certain of God’s faithfulness. How much more certain can we NT people be, who have heard the gospel and seen His salvation in Christ. We can look back to that Christ event and also look forward to His second coming. What’s more, we can expect God to turn toward us in the present moment.

Psalm 25:5 Lead me in thy truth, and teach me: for thou art the God of my salvation; on thee do I wait all the day.

David asks for God’s guidance on the right way to live and to walk in the Truth. Jesus is the way, and the life, and the truth. Believe Him and follow Him in truth. But we do not have the ability to follow Jesus in our own reason or strength. Therefore, we pray for the help and guidance of the Holy Spirit who dwells within. We confess our sin and weakness, and we confess His forgiveness and strength. We hear the Gospel, for it is the power of God to believe and live. He promises to lead. Romans 8:14: “For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.”

We ask the Lord to teach us, not only to know right from wrong, but also how to actually live that way. Jesus commissions us: “Make disciples…teaching them to obey.” Again, teach Law and Gospel not just to learn truth but to do it. The God of my salvation will teach me to do. Confess your need for God’s help and believe you have it.

Then we wait on Him all day long, focusing on His Word, paying attention to His Presence, and seeking to serve Him by serving others. Waiting is being aware of Jesus on the mind and in the heart all the time. Pray without ceasing. Ask the Helper for guidance and strength to live according to His Word. Pray the Lord’s Prayer, which essentially asks, “make me a better person.”
